About the museum
The museum is named after its founder, Gio Bono Ferrari, a scholar of the history of sailing in Liguria, and of Camogli in particular, and author of the “Trilogia della vela”. In 1938 the collection was donated to the municipality, which housed it in the foyer of the Principe Umberto theatre, today the Teatro Sociale; Ferrari was its first director, followed in 1942 by Mario Casabona.
In 1944, because of the war, the material was sheltered in a warehouse. In 1973 the new director, Captain Attilio Bertolotto, a scholar of maritime history and builder of models and ship instruments, was commissioned to set up the museum in its present seat in Via Gio Bono Ferrari.
The paintings, photographs, models and documents on display are gifts from Camogli families and bear witness to the more than 2,900 sailing ships that Camogli shipowners bought and that captains and sailors crewed between the Napoleonic wars and the First World War. The captions of the display cases give the surnames and nicknames of the people of Camogli and recall owners, builders and donors, making the museum a place of memory dedicated to real people.
The collection comprises 146 models of ships, built almost all by Camogli sailors, bottle ships and numerous nautical instruments, among them barometers, compasses, telescopes, chronometers, octants and sextants.
