About the museum

The Museo Giardino della Rosa Antica is in Montagnana di Serramazzoni, at 420 metres above sea level and about 25–30 km from Modena, on 43 hectares, three of which are devoted entirely to over 800 rose varieties. In 1996 the site was abandoned clay soil: the founders chose a “gentle” method, letting the land regenerate on its own for seven years before intervening.

The visit takes place inside and outside the park: the garden of old and classic roses, the nursery with potted roses, the museum’s indoor rooms and the herbarium of the senses, designed by Riccardo Viti as a multisensory herbarium involving all five senses, with seeds and thorns to touch. The shop sells rose specialities, books and other products inspired by the flowers of the museum.

The museum also offers courses, meetings and events on the cultivation, history and uses of the rose and, on request, tastings of local products and rose specialities for groups of at least 10 people.
