About the museum
The museum is housed in the nineteenth-century building of the former pretura (magistrate's court) in Fauglia, in rooms that once served as the prison cells. It was created to preserve and make visible to the community the collection of works by Giorgio Kienerk, donated to the municipality by his daughter Vittoria.
Kienerk, born in Florence in 1869 and died in Fauglia in 1948, spent every summer from 1919 at the family villa at Poggio alla Farnia and painted the Pisan hills around the village several times. A versatile artist, he started out from the teachings of Cecioni and Signorini and arrived at refined “macchie” (spots), drawings made without outlines.
The collection comprises about 130 pieces, largely oil paintings, with some pastels, numerous drawings, sketchbooks, prints and lithographs, as well as sculptures and bas-reliefs. The works cover the whole of the artist's career, from his early production to his maturity, across intimist and symbolist themes, a post-Macchiaioli style and a marked pointillism.
