About the museum
The Casa Museo Carlo Pepi is located in Crespina, in the Pisan hills, and is the family home where the historic core of the collection of the critic and collector Carlo Pepi began; he died on 23 August 2025. For more than forty years the collection was open to visitors, schools and associations such as FAI, Italia Nostra and Rotary.
Pepi came to art young, inspired by Van Gogh, and bought contemporary works very early on. He focused above all on the drawings of the Macchiaioli, the nineteenth-century Tuscan innovators, and later collected contemporary artists. He was a friend and collaborator of the American critic James Beck and worked on forgeries and attributions; he also founded the Istituzione Casa Natale Modigliani.
The house museum holds the historic core of the collection, consisting mainly of drawings and prints by the Macchiaioli and their pupils, with works by Tuscan artists, particularly from Livorno, and by twentieth-century masters, among whom prints predominate. The Montelisi complex, with site-specific installations of twentieth-century Tuscan art, has not been open to visitors since the collector’s death. It is run by the Associazione Casa Museo Carlo Pepi, with his niece Maria Francesca Pepi as manager.
