About the museum
The museum occupies several rooms of the 16th-century count's apartment on the noble floor of the Gonzaga fortress (Rocca) of Novellara, designed and decorated under the direction of Lelio Orsi. The collections have been owned by the Comune since 1827.
The collections include portraits of the Gonzaga of Novellara, paintings of the Emilian school from the 16th to 18th centuries, and portraits of local figures. The most important piece is the collection of apothecary jars from the Jesuit convent, with 16th-century Venetian majolica and jars from Lodi dating from 1740.
