About the museum
The Mulino Museo Salvini stands on the border between Gemonio and Cocquio-Trevisago, in the mill where the painter Innocente Salvini (1889–1979) was born and lived. The building is a rare example of 17th-century industrial archaeology, built on the remains of a medieval tower. It still works, using the water of the Viganella stream to drive the original millstones and gears. The museum opened in 1983 in the artist’s birthplace.
The permanent exhibition presents Salvini’s works across his whole career, from the early 20th century to a few years before his death: scenes of rural life, people at work, familiar landscapes and personal subjects, painted in a style centred on colour. One section is devoted to the artist’s frescoes and painting techniques; their restoration was carried out in 2022. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events.
