About the museum
The museum was inaugurated on 30 December 2004 by the Centro Maschere e Strutture Gestuali, founded in 1979 by Donato Sartori together with the stage designer Paolo Trombetta and the architect Paola Piizzi. It houses the works of the sculptors Amleto Sartori (1915–1962) and his son Donato, who for more than eighty years were leading figures in research on theatrical and artistic masks.
The venue is Villa Savioli, a Venetian villa of the Trevisan Savioli family that was one of the most important holiday residences of the Venetian nobility. The building dates back to the first half of the 17th century, while its present layout is mainly due to the 18th century. The municipality of Abano Terme granted the villa on loan (comodato) to the Centro under an agreement approved in 1997.
The route extends over three floors. On the second floor, the section “Teatro” brings together around two thousand masks created for major performances around the world, the core of the museum. On the first floor, a section is devoted to “Mascheramento Urbano” and “Struttura Gestuale”, multimedia mask-sculptures linked to contemporary arts. The ground floor hosts temporary exhibitions. The museum also displays geo-ethno-anthropological finds and works collected on the Sartori family's journeys through various cultures of the world.
