About the museum
The museum is located in the entrance hall of the Casa Generalizia of the Brothers of the Christian Schools in Rome. The first version was designed in 2001 by Brother Donald Johanson, with rooms arranged in chronological order. After refurbishment, the museum reopened to the public on 30 April 2013, during the celebrations for the anniversary of the founder’s birth in Reims.
The route traces the main stages of the life of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, his spiritual and ascetic writings, his spirituality, the early Lasallian school and schooling in the 18th and 19th centuries, through to Lasallian holiness and the international dimension of the Institute today. In the last room a mural by Brother José David Berbesí looks towards the educational mission of the future.
Among the objects preserved are the portrait of the founder known as “Léger”, dating from 1734, and La Salle’s priestly vestments, which were kept safe during the French Revolution. Every year a temporary exhibition is set up in the spaces of the Biblioteca Lasalliana, in the basement of the Casa Generalizia.
