About the museum
The museum was founded in 2017 from the collection of Alain Borghini, the result of some twenty years of research and study into medals struck in Europe between the French Revolution and the Restoration. The collection was first presented on 24 March in the restored medieval prisons of the Cassero in Castiglion Fiorentino and is now on display in Arezzo.
The current venue is a large exhibition hall of more than 500 square metres in the industrial zone of Arezzo. About thirty display cases follow a chronological and thematic order, from the period before the Revolution (1760) to the Restoration. The museum also has an area with Napoleonic prints from the first half of the 19th century, a room for lectures and group teaching, a small room for individual seminars and a numismatic restoration laboratory. The museum's publications can be consulted and bought on site.
Among the most important pieces are medals struck from the lead of the bars of the Bastille, micro-medals thrown to the crowd at the coronation of Napoleon and Josephine, the medal for the veterans of Trafalgar, the complete series of 40 medals by Mudie and a punch used in 1808 by the Paris Mint for the annexation of Tuscany to the French Empire.
