About the museum
After the death of the sculptor Medardo Rosso in 1928, his son Francesco inherited many works from the studios in Paris and Milan. He decided to bring them together in Barzio, a village near Lake Como where he had spent his childhood holidays with his mother.
To house them he bought the old 17th-century chapel next to the village oratory, which was deconsecrated for the purpose, and set up the museum with advice from the architect Piero Portaluppi. In the same garden he also had his own house built.
The Museo and the Archivio Medardo Rosso are private institutions, presided over and run by the artist’s heirs, and the Archive is supported by a scientific committee. The works in Barzio have been lent several times to major international exhibitions dedicated to the sculptor.
