About the museum

The museum was set up in 2000, the year in which the seventh centenary of the founding of the Arciconfraternita del SS. Sacramento e di S. Giulia was celebrated. It is the oldest lay association in Livorno. Since 20 August 2008 it has borne the name of Francesco Terreni, governor of the Arciconfraternita, who conceived and established it. It is housed in the premises of the confraternity, at Largo Duomo 1, beside the oratory dedicated to Saint Giulia, patron saint of the city.

The visit begins on the ground floor, in the sacristy, which holds a velvet altar frontal with gilt silver ornaments by the goldsmith Antonio Leonardi (1682), a reproduction of a marble inscription of 1716 and display cases with ex-votos. It continues on the first floor in the Sala Magistrale, with the permanent exhibition on the seven hundred years of the confraternity and on the cult of Saint Giulia in Livorno, documented in seven panels, a sketch by Giuseppe Maria Terreni and historic banners.

The Sala degli Arredi holds a panel from the first half of the 14th century with Saint Giulia and eight episodes from her life, liturgical vestments from the 17th to the 19th century, crucifixes, chalices, reliquaries and a prie-dieu used by Pius IX in 1857 and by John Paul II in 1982.
