About the museum

The Museo “Michelangelo” is a historical, scientific, technological and natural history museum owned by the Istituto Tecnico Statale “M. Buonarroti” in Caserta. It shows how science and teaching were carried out in the past. It is recognised as a museum of regional importance in Campania and belongs to the Sistema Museale “Terra di Lavoro”.

The collections are arranged in sections: mineralogy, with rocks and minerals; surveying, with instruments from around 1850 to the 1970s; history of measurement, with working replicas of instruments from antiquity to the late Renaissance; calculation, mechanical writing and audio-video recording; teaching and science models; and the history of drawing and the pure sciences, with physics and chemistry apparatus from 1864 to 1975.

The museum also includes the Giardino delle macchine matematiche (garden of mathematical machines), with replicas of machines used from antiquity to the Renaissance to find one's way, measure time and distances and represent the territory.
