About the museum

The decision to establish the diocesan museum of Caserta dates back to 1996, when the Italian Episcopal Conference supported its creation with funds from the otto per mille (the church tax share). The official inauguration took place on 7 February 2011, but the venue had already hosted contemporary art exhibitions since 2009.

The main seat occupies the chapels of the Santissimo Sacramento and of the Rosario, once linked to the church of the Redentore, in the historic centre, not far from the cathedral and the Reggia. A detached, unofficial seat is located at Casertavecchia, in Piazza Vescovado.

The works come from churches of the diocese that were destroyed, closed or at risk, and were gathered into the storerooms of the Curia after the earthquake of 1980. The museum holds about two hundred works among paintings, sculptures, liturgical apparatus, reliquaries and ex-votos from the 14th to the 19th century; the oldest stone finds, including fragments of the 12th-century ambo, are mostly at Casertavecchia.
