About the museum
The Arona mineralogical museum opened in 1983 and brings together mainly specimens donated by members of the Gruppo Archeologico Storico Mineralogico Aronese (GASMA), which manages it. It is housed in a 19th-century building with wide arcades, formerly a covered market, on the central Piazza San Graziano.
The display cases hold about 450 mineral specimens from all over the world, with particular attention to the Ossola area and the Baveno quarries. Among the pieces highlighted by the regional museum network are a rare bavenite, a meteorite fragment, an emerald from Val Vigezzo, a pyromorphite from Mottarone and several agates.
An educational section offers three-dimensional crystallographic models and a video station linked to a stereo microscope. Guided visits led by mineralogists are offered, free of charge for school groups, and some mineralogy texts from the library can be consulted on site.
