About the museum
The collection grew out of the passion of Ferdinando Salce, known as Nando (1877–1962), an accountant from Treviso who in 1895 bought his first poster, “Incandescenza a gas brevetto Auer” (Auer gas mantle) by Giovanni Maria Mataloni. Salce gathered about 25,000 pieces, kept in the attic of his house in piazza Mazzini, and by will of 26 April 1962 left them to the Italian State.
For decades the collection had no exhibition venue of its own and was promoted mainly by the Comune di Treviso through temporary exhibitions. In 2014 the Ministry established the Museo nazionale Collezione Salce, which opened to the public in May 2017 in the San Gaetano complex. From December 2019 management has been the responsibility of the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali Veneto.
Following later acquisitions the collection now numbers about 50,000 posters and bills and is the largest Italian collection of advertising graphics. In 2021 a second venue was inaugurated, in the Santa Margherita complex, which houses exhibition and conservation spaces and an immersive multimedia installation.
The museum has no permanent display. For scientific and conservation reasons, the materials are presented in rotation in themed exhibitions in the two venues, which are close to each other in the historic centre.
