About the museum

The Museo diocesano di Treviso is housed in the “Canoniche Vecchie” (Old Canonries), the former residences of the cathedral canons and among the oldest buildings in the city. On the ground floor a stretch of the ancient herringbone-patterned terracotta floor has been restored, while on the second floor a floor of terracotta tiles survives. From the museum you can also reach the crypt of the cathedral, dating from around the 11th century.

The collections include finds from the 4th to the 20th century and tell the story of the city, not only its religious history. At the entrance are displayed 14th-century sarcophagi from the cathedral, among them the tomb of Alberto, a physician who taught in Treviso in 1317, evidence of the presence of the Studio (university) in the city.

The route is organised into archaeological, medieval, picture gallery, textile, sculpture and goldsmith’s sections. Standing out are the medieval frescoes, a gilded 14th-century altar frontal with the Last Judgement and the silver statue of Saint Liberale, made in 1600 by a German goldsmith.
