About the museum
The Museo nazionale etrusco “Pompeo Aria” in Marzabotto houses the finds from Kainua, an Etruscan city founded in the 5th century BC on the Pian di Misano, near the river Reno, and one of the main city-states of Etruria Padana (Po Valley Etruria). Its orthogonal layout, with main streets and blocks, is rare among Etruscan cities.
The site has been known since the 16th century. In 1831 the land passed to Count Giuseppe Aria, and work to create a park brought the first votive bronzes to light; from 1862 Aria financed the official excavations. The state bought the site and the finds in 1933. A fire in 1944 destroyed much of the museum; the present building was inaugurated on 4 November 1979. Since 1988 excavations have continued under the care of the University of Bologna and the Soprintendenza (heritage authority).
The route, across four rooms, presents the characteristics of the area, materials from the excavations of the settlement and the acropolis, architectural terracottas, two grave groups from Sasso Marconi, reconstructions of house roofs, votive statuettes and the famous kouros head in Greek marble. The archaeological area can be visited and includes the acropolis with its altars, the Temple of Tinia, the fontile sanctuary, house-workshops, a kiln, a necropolis and streets with drainage channels.
