About the museum
MuseOntani occupies the ground floor of the Palazzo comunale in Vergato, built between the 14th and 15th centuries and seat of the Capitani della Montagna (Captains of the Mountain), magistrates appointed by Bologna who governed the area from 1414 to 1796. The museum was inaugurated on 7 April 2019.
The core of the collection consists of works by the artist Luigi Ontani, partly donated to the municipality and partly on loan. His output ranges from papier-mâché to plaster, from glass to ceramics, from marble to wood, bronze and photography, with many allegorical, folkloric, mythological, legendary and literary references. Among the works on show are PanOlimpo, Leda e Cigno and the Tableaux Vivants.
Works by Ontani in Vergato also include the four stained-glass windows of the Council Chamber, dedicated to the cycle of life, of the day and of the seasons and bearing the coats of arms of the captains’ families, and the fountain “RenVergatellAppenninMontovolo”, inaugurated in 2019 in the square in front of the railway station.
