About the museum
The Centro di documentazione Giorgio Morandi was founded in 1984 in Grizzana Morandi, the Apennine village that the Bolognese painter had been visiting since 1913, when the family spent the summer there as guests of the neighbouring Veggetti family. Since 2000 it has been based in the Fienili del Campiaro complex, the farm buildings that Morandi painted many times in his landscapes.
Opposite the barns stands the house that the Morandi family had built at the end of the 1950s for their holidays. After Giorgio’s death, his sister Maria Teresa gave it to the Comune di Grizzana on condition that it remain as it was and be open to visitors. After a restoration financed with PNRR funds, the house museum reopened in July 2025: it preserves the library, dining room, kitchen, the sisters’ bedrooms, the artist’s bedroom and the studio with his working tools.
In one of the three barns is the Museo degli Allievi, which displays on two floors works by artists who had Morandi as their teacher of printmaking techniques at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna; the works have been donated by collectors and heirs since 2018. Another area of the barns hosts temporary exhibitions.
