About the museum
The idea for the museum was promoted by the Legione trentina, an association of First World War volunteers, with the support of the Command of the Alpine troops and the Associazione nazionale alpini. In 1938 the government welcomed it by establishing the Fondazione Acropoli Alpina, and the Doss Trento, near the mausoleum of Cesare Battisti, was chosen as its seat. The access road, begun in 1940 by Alpini from all five divisions, was inaugurated in 1942.
In 1953 the municipality of Trento donated the former Austrian powder magazine that today houses the museum; the foundation stone was laid in 1956 and the official inauguration took place on 15 March 1958, during the national Alpini gathering, followed by a second inauguration in 1964. In 1978 the Foundation was dissolved and the collection passed to the Ministry of Defence, which still administers it. Since 2008 the association “Amici del museo storico nazionale degli alpini” has operated. After closure for renovation in 2017 and works begun in 2018, the museum reopened on 13 October 2019.
The route traces the history of the Alpini corps from its origins to today, with uniforms, weapons, equipment, artillery, instruments, insignia, photographs, documents and personal memorabilia, many of them donated by families. It includes the chronological hall, the shrine of the gold medals and sections devoted to the Alpini on the move, to alpine themes and to those fallen on missions. An archive and a library complete the offer.
