About the museum

The Casa Caveau Vino Santo is located in Padergnone, a hamlet of Vallelaghi in the Valle dei Laghi, in a former fruit store built around 1800 by the Rigotti family. The building was the largest grape-drying loft in the area. It could hold up to 500 quintals of grapes, spread on wicker mats and lake reeds stacked in piles up to four metres high, and it remained in operation until 1980, when the family ceased its activity.

The upper part of the building no longer exists, but the avvolti (the stone vaults) have survived and, after conservation restoration, have become the heart of the museum. The idea of enhancing the drying loft came from the Associazione Vignaioli del Vino Santo Trentino della Valle dei Laghi (Association of Vino Santo Trentino Growers of the Valle dei Laghi). It took shape in 2018, thanks to a call for proposals from the GAL Trentino centrale (Central Trentino Local Action Group) and the support of the Municipality of Vallelaghi and the Cassa Rurale (rural bank).

The display tells the story of Vino Santo Trentino DOC, the passito made from Nosiola grapes, through voices, sounds, images, scents and tastings. The route begins outdoors, with a walk from the car park of the Parco del Lago di Santa Massenza to the Piazzetta del Mercato, along seven educational stations that recall the shape of the arèle (drying racks) and illustrate the stages of production. The Casa Caveau is run by APT Garda Dolomiti, the Municipality of Vallelaghi and the Ecomuseo della Valle dei Laghi, which provides the staff for guided tours.
