About the museum
The Museo Obrietan is a private museum of Oriental antiques, opened on 11 June 2005 at Villa Orna in Brendola, on the edge of Vicenza. It was wanted by Gioacchino Obrietan and created with the collaboration of two scholars, one an expert in Eastern history and one from the Accademia Olimpica in Vicenza; it is directed by his son Gianmaria.
The villa, a manor house built at the end of the 18th century, was bought by the Obrietan family in 1987 as a residence. Since 1996 it has housed the Galleria Antiquaria Thais and since 2005 the museum, whose exhibition area is on the west side of the main building.
On the second floor a square hall hosts temporary exhibitions and events; an ancient Chinese portal in wood and wrought iron leads into the permanent display, divided into five sections: the Celestial Empire, with furniture from aristocratic residences, mainly of the Qing dynasty; the sounds of the ancient empire, with Chinese bells from the 16th century onwards; daily life, with utensils from China and Tibet; the art and spirituality of Tibet; and the Hoi-An treasure, with Vietnamese ceramics from the Thais collection.
