About the museum

The museum is housed in Palazzo Lembo, a building erected at the end of the 18th century by the Lembo family on the remains of Baselice’s medieval castle. After restoration the palace was recognised in 2011 as a “Meraviglia d’Italia” (Wonder of Italy) for its architecture and for the frescoes in some rooms on the upper floor, which recall those of the Reggia di Caserta. At the back you can also visit a hanging garden with an ice house and an arcaded walkway leading to the tower, below which open underground caves of uncertain date.

The Museo Civico Paleontologico del Fortore was created in 1996 by the Baselice branch of the Archeoclub d’Italia and was entrusted to the municipality on loan under an agreement of 21 January 2013; in its present form it was opened in September 2012 in collaboration with the Archeoclub.

The collection presents fossils from the Fortore valley dating from 100 to 20 million years ago, mostly molluscs and bivalves, together with a collection of minerals and rocks donated by the Carusi family and other citizens. A civic section tells the story of local rural traditions with recently restored finds and costumes.
