About the museum
The museum arose from the passion of the master clockmaker Salvatore Ricci, of San Marco dei Cavoti, who throughout his life collected and restored tower clock mechanisms of every period. After the exhibitions of the 1990s, in 1997 the municipality authorised a permanent exhibition, and the following year it established the Museum of Tower Clocks in a multipurpose hall; the machines were later acquired by the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (National Research Council) to promote scientific culture.
The museum was officially opened on 17 November 2000 and since 2007 has had its permanent home in the historic centre, in the restored rooms of the Palazzo Cavaniglia, between Via Rovagnera and Muro Nuovo. It holds about fifty timekeeping machines dating from the 16th century onwards, which document the technical and scientific development of time measurement.
Visits are led by students of the Istituto tecnico economico e turistico “Medi-Livatino”, who have “adopted” the clocks and act as guides, explaining how the early timekeeping machines work.
