About the museum

L'Aia dei Musei is a cultural project in the Marsican town of Avezzano, which has recovered and redeveloped a disused site, the former municipal slaughterhouse. The lapidarium and the museum on the draining of the Fucino have been open to visitors since 1 May 2012 as the first elements of a wider plan, under the patronage of the municipality of Avezzano.

The museum consists of two main buildings and a third space for contemporary art exhibitions and outdoor events. In the lapidarium “Le Parole della Pietra”, ancient inscriptions, once kept in the municipal storerooms, are displayed with scientific rigour and an educational approach. They tell the history of the Marsica through private, religious and political events. One room is devoted to Avezzano before the earthquake of 1915, with a 3D video of the vanished town, coats of arms, the portal of the church of San Nicola and the capitals of the cathedral of San Bartolomeo.

“Il Filo dell'Acqua” uses a modern, multimedia display to illustrate the great hydraulic engineering project that led to the disappearance of the Fucino, Italy's third-largest lake by area, turning fishermen into farmers. The route combines ancient sources, images and eyewitness voices with the designs of engineers of the past, leading up to the work carried out by Alessandro Torlonia in the second half of the 19th century.
