About the museum

The gallery is housed in the Castello Orsini-Colonna, the fortress that dominates the centre of Avezzano. The building was erected around 1490 at the wish of Virginio Orsini, and in 1565 Marcantonio Colonna converted it into a fortified residence. The earthquake of 1915 badly damaged it and destroyed much of its interiors and decorations. After restoration, the castle has become an exhibition and multi-purpose space.

The collection of modern and contemporary art is dedicated to the critic Ernesto Pomilio and includes paintings and sculptures of geometric abstraction, Informel, collage and décollage, as well as figurative and abstract works. Artists represented include Remo Brindisi, Mario Schifano, Luigi Veronesi and Pino Pascali, whose “Bucranio” (bucranium) is preserved. On the first floor there are also architectural models of Avezzano as it appeared before the 1915 earthquake.

The rooms on the first floor have been restored, and the civic gallery reopened to the public in 2025.
