About the museum
The museum was founded in 2006 on an initiative of the Canale d’Agordo municipal administration and the archpriest Mons. Sirio Da Corte, with the aim of worthily commemorating the town’s most illustrious son, Albino Luciani, elected pope in 1978 as John Paul I. The building was inaugurated on 26 August 2016 by the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and is run by the Fondazione Papa Luciani.
The museum is housed in a 15th-century palace overlooking the main square of the village and spread over several floors, laid out to offer a sensory route. It tells the life and teaching of Luciani, but also the historical and environmental context in which he grew up and the stories of other personalities from the valley who distinguished themselves in art, culture and religion.
The Foundation also manages other related sites included in the same ticket: Albino Luciani’s birthplace, the old Casa delle Regole (House of Rules) of 1640, and the Schola of the Confraternita dei Battuti with the monumental church of San Simon in Vallada Agordina, which are part of the Ecomuseo della Valle del Biois (Biois Valley Ecomuseum).
