About the museum
The museum was established in 1985 to preserve and make known the historical and artistic heritage of the parish church of Saints Peter and Paul and of the Valstrona area. It occupies two rooms of the sacristy in the hamlet of Forno and holds about five hundred works from the 15th century onwards, arranged in chronological order.
The wooden sculptures are of particular importance: they express the mountain culture of the valley and the woodworking skill that emigrants carried abroad. They include a Madonna of the Rosary from the mid-17th century, two pairs of gilded and polychrome reliquary busts, and a Pietà from the early 18th century, carved from a single trunk with a star-shaped base.
The museum also displays paintings, silverware and liturgical furnishings, largely of Lombard production, brass alms dishes embossed in a German workshop, sacred vestments and 19th-century votive panels recalling the great snowfall of 1888 and the shipwreck of 1805, when an emigrant ship bound for America sank.
