About the museum
The museum opened in March 2000 in the premises of the former tool workshop, one of the oldest buildings of the Pontedera plant, where the company began production in the early 1920s. It was created to preserve the historical heritage of one of Italy’s oldest companies and to tell the story of Piaggio and its territory through the products and documentation of the Historical Archive.
The museum is run by the Fondazione Piaggio, founded in 1994 by Piaggio & C., the Comune di Pontedera and the Provincia di Pisa, and now partly owned by Piaggio & C. and the Comune. The museum was completely renovated in 2018 and now covers 5,000 square metres, with more than 350 items on display.
The permanent collections are spread over three rooms: the Vespa room; the Piaggio room, with two-, three- and four-wheeled products such as the Ape, Porter and mopeds, and some pieces from the pre-war railway and aviation industries; and the Moto room, dedicated to the Aprilia, Gilera and Moto Guzzi brands and their world titles. The Historical Archive holds more than 120,000 documents and about 60,000 technical drawings and can be consulted by appointment.
