About the museum
The museum is housed in the Palazzo Guicciardini in the historic centre of Montopoli in Val d'Arno and was set up in spring 2003 (opened in 2004 according to Wikipedia). From the outset it has gathered the archaeological, historical, artistic and natural history testimonies of the area, conceived as a “biglietto da visita” (a calling card) for discovering the rest of the district. Since 2007 it has been part of the Rete (now Sistema) Museale del Valdarno di Sotto, and since 2017 it has been the hub of the Sistema Museale Montopolese.
The sections are spread across the various floors of the palazzo. On the first floor the archaeology section presents the Majnoni-Baldovinetti collections, with Etruscan, Roman and early medieval objects, and the collection of Isidoro Falchi, a doctor and amateur archaeologist linked to the discovery of the Etruscan necropolises of Vetulonia and Populonia. Another section focuses on the excavations of the Rocca di Montopoli and displays coats of arms, stone fragments, frescoes and liturgical furnishings from buildings in the town.
One room is dedicated to the artistic terracottas of Dante Milani, who opened the first kiln in the area in 1923; the basement level houses the palaeontology room with important fossil remains, including parts of a whale and a shark. The route closes with the contemporary figurative art section, with works by Silvio Bicchi, Menotti Pertici, Mario Borgiotti and Paolo Ciampini.
