About the museum
The Museo del Lavoro e della Civiltà Rurale was created in 1984 at San Gervasio, in the municipality of Palaia, by Giuseppe Menichetti and Maria Laura Tommasini, and houses the educational centre named after Giuseppe Menichetti. It was the first ethnographic and anthropological collection in the Valdera.
The museum occupies a farmhouse in the Pisan style and recreates the typical peasant dwelling, from the cellar up to the stable. Next to the museum, in the oratory of San Colombano rebuilt in the 17th century, devotional books and sacred furnishings used in the parish of San Gervasio between the 19th and 20th centuries are on display. The museum also has a library of more than 300 volumes on agriculture, old trades, popular devotions and peasant cooking.
The museum is run by volunteers, who offer activities and educational workshops, cultural afternoons, and take part in the Notte dei Musei (Museums Night) and in the regional campaign “Amico Museo”. Visits are possible by appointment, as are participation in the educational workshops, herbalism courses and consultation of the library.
