About the museum
The Isolino Virginia, on Lake Varese, is home to one of the oldest pile-dwelling settlements in the Alpine arc, inhabited for more than 4,000 years. The site was discovered in the 19th century, and in 1962 the marquis Gian Felice Ponti donated it to the Comune di Varese. Since 2011 it has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the serial site “Siti palafitticoli preistorici dell’arco alpino” (Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps).
The visit includes an open-air educational trail with a full-scale reconstruction of a pile dwelling, built using the methods of experimental archaeology and furnished with copies of finds from the island, and the small Museo Ponti, which opens with an introductory video. The display cases show remains of Neolithic houses and finds such as quartz objects, arrowheads, posts, animal remains and pottery fragments.
The site belongs to the Musei Civici di Varese. The islet, of about 9,200 square metres and almost entirely covered with vegetation, is protected for environmental and archaeological reasons.
