Museo Revoltella

Modern art gallery born from the palace of Baron Revoltella, with paintings and sculptures from the 19th to the 20th century.

Opening hoursAdmission €8 Partially accessible

About the museum

The museum originated from the home of Baron Pasquale Revoltella, a Trieste entrepreneur who, on his death in 1869, left the city the palace with its works, furnishings and books. In 1872 the Comune opened it to the public as a museum; the venue is considered the oldest Italian gallery specifically dedicated to modern art.

The historic core is the palace built in 1858 to a design by the Berlin architect Friedrich Hitzig. In 1907 the Comune bought the neighbouring Palazzo Brunner, which was used in full only after the renovation by Carlo Scarpa, from 1963; Palazzo Basevi was later added to the extension, completed in 1991. The exhibition area now exceeds 4,000 square metres and is organised around a full-height atrium remodelled by Scarpa.

The collection comprises about 350 paintings and sculptures, partly bought at the Venice Biennale, and documents Italian and European art from the 19th century to the present, with works by artists such as Canova, Hayez, Fattori, Medardo Rosso, Morandi and Fontana. The management of the museum is overseen by the Curatorio provided for in the founder's will.
