About the museum
Sa Dom’e Farra (“the house of the flour”) is a large Campidanese house in Quartu Sant’Elena. The ethnographic museum was opened there in 1978 on the initiative of the cavaliere Giovanni Battista Musiu and is regarded as the first ethnographic institution in Sardinia. In 2008 the Region transferred the house to the municipality of Quartu, which considers it a symbol of local identity.
The house itself forms part of the display: the rooms are furnished like a typical manor house of Quartu, with the old bedrooms and the storeroom (“su magazinu”), which is also used for meetings and book presentations. Objects of farming tradition and popular culture are on show.
The building also houses the Museo multimediale della poesia improvvisata, dedicated to “is cantadoris”, the improvising poets of the Campidano, with interactive portraits of the poets and a large interactive map comparing Sardinian improvised poetry with improvisation traditions in other countries.
Today the house is used as a centre of popular culture: associations such as Su Idanu and Su Scrignu de Campidanu run free workshops there on Sardinian dance, dressmaking and improvised poetry, with the aim of making it a permanent workshop of traditions.
