About the museum
The museum was founded in 1953 on the initiative of Carlo Maxia, then full professor of Anthropology at the University of Cagliari, who after the war obtained funds to raise the building of the former Istituto di Anatomia Umana Normale. For forty-five years it shared premises in via Porcell with the Sezione di Scienze Antropologiche, before moving to the new seat of the Cittadella Universitaria di Monserrato.
Since 1993 it has been part of the C.I.M.C.A.S., the university's Interdepartmental Centre for Museums and the Historical Archive. The collections document the physical characteristics of the Sardinians from prehistory and protohistory to the present day, and the cultural heritage of the island: casts, skulls, mummies, traditional costumes, agricultural and pastoral tools, musical instruments, ex-votos, old prints, slides, films and lithic finds.
The museum serves an educational and research function in biological and cultural anthropology.
