About the museum
The museum belongs to the University of Cagliari and is housed in Via Trentino, in the Department of Chemical and Geological Sciences. It is dedicated to Leonardo De Prunner and holds thousands of mineralogical, geological and palaeontological finds, mainly from Sardinia but also from other parts of the world.
Much of the collection is displayed in the cupboards of the department’s corridors, while other material is kept in drawer cabinets awaiting transfer to suitable display cases. The material kept is predominantly Sardinian.
Among the minerals of the De Prunner collection are argentites and native silver from the Sarrabus, and cerussites, anglesites and phosgenites from Montevecchio, Monteponi and Villaputzu. The museum also holds a collection of Sardinian rocks by Alberto Della Marmora, with the atlases that accompany his work “Voyage en Sardaigne”, and an interesting collection of diamonds and platinum nuggets donated in 1866 by G. Mendel.
