About the museum
The museum was created to house the donation that the Milanese sculptor Giuseppe Scalvini (1908–2003) made to the city of Desio. Since 1999 it has been located in the 18th-century Villa Cusani Tittoni Traversi, designed by Piermarini, one of the villas of pleasure (ville di delizia) of Brianza.
The original core comprises thirty-six sculptures in plaster, wax and bronze; in 2003 sixteen charcoal drawings and some prints were added, completing the holdings of original works by the master. Works donated by several families have also been added to the collection.
Scalvini had been connected with Desio since 1937, when he made two angels for the tympanum of the basilica of the Santi Siro e Materno. He joined the group “15 Borgonovo” and then the existential realism of the 1950s, and he exhibited at the Venice Biennales of 1948 and 1954. In Milan he created decorations and bas-reliefs, including the eagles of the Stazione Centrale.
The donation is looked after by the Associazione Amici del Museo Scalvini, which promotes knowledge of the artist. Alongside the permanent display, the museum hosts exhibitions of 20th-century and contemporary artists.
