About the museum
The museum, opened in 1983 and named after the Germanist Giuseppe Gabetti (1886–1948), born in Dogliani, has its origins in the seventies of the 20th century, following the chance discovery at San Quirico of a small group of Roman burials from the 1st century AD, including a cremation tomb with rich grave goods of glass and fine pottery. The association “Amici del Museo” supported its growth, also thanks to historical and archaeological finds reported and handed over by citizens.
It is housed in the historic Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall), the former Carmine convent. The route, spread over four rooms and accompanied by panels in Italian and English, is dedicated to the settlement of Dogliani and its surroundings in different periods, from prehistory to the Roman era, with numerous references to the medieval period. Among the finds stands out a sandstone head from the Middle Iron Age, which was once built into the old town walls.
