About the museum
The museum collects material from the excavations of Augusta Bagiennorum, the Roman city that stood in the territory of Bene Vagienna. It is housed in the Sala Assandria, set up at the beginning of the 20th century on the first floor of a palazzo reached by a grand staircase that tradition attributes to Filippo Juvarra.
The first room displays the marble jambs of a theatre stage, architectural fragments, terracotta antefixes, inscriptions and stamped bricks. In the centre, a display case holds the grave goods from the southern necropolis, dating to the 1st century AD, including ceramics, glass, oil lamps, tools, bronze ornaments, coins and marble heads.
The second room presents the coats of arms of the families that ruled Bene, a series of Savoy medals and the carved keystones of the old parish church. The third room preserves memorabilia of Napoleon’s passage through the town, arranged by the Amici di Bene association.
