About the museum
The oldest works in the gallery come from the collections of the former Museo Civico, founded in 1882 and abolished in 1948; the more recent works, from the 19th and 20th centuries, come from purchases and donations. The gallery opened on 26 May 2008 to bring together the city’s art collections, which had been dispersed among other museums, offices and storerooms.
It is housed in the Teatro comunale Francesco Cilea and holds around 170 paintings and sculptures from the 15th to the 20th century, most of them owned by the Municipality of Reggio Calabria.
In the first room two small panels by Antonello da Messina are displayed, “San Girolamo penitente” and “Abramo servito dai tre angeli”. They were made for private devotion around the middle of the 15th century, bought by the municipality from the Rota collection in 1890–1891, and restored in 2020. Other works include the large “Ritorno del figliol prodigo” by Mattia Preti, “Cristo e l’adultera” by Luca Giordano, landscapes by Giuseppe Benassai, some works by Renato Guttuso and a section of marble sculptures.
