About the museum

The collection was founded on the initiative of inspector Edoardo Testafochi and continued by General Bruti until the Inspectorate was abolished in 1895. Between 1902 and 1907 Colonel Batturini set up a body for the preservation of relics, which gave rise to the museum in the La Marmora barracks in Trastevere; King Victor Emmanuel III inaugurated it on 18 June 1904. The museum gained legal personality in 1921, and in 1931 it was moved to Porta Pia, where it opened on 18 September 1932.

The seat is inside Porta Pia, on Via XX Settembre, and is a military body that depends on the Comando militare della Capitale (Military Command of the Capital). On the ground floor the La Marmora room preserves two models of carbine designed by the founder of the corps, Alessandro La Marmora, and the Salone d'onore holds his proposal for the creation of the Bersaglieri; the shrine houses the sword he used at the battle of Ponte di Goito and the collective medals for valour.

The south side of the ground floor and the first floor display weapons, uniforms, portraits and relics linked to the historical events of the corps, including Enrico Toti's bicycle. The museum also has a library and a historical archive.
