About the museum
The museum was conceived in 1912 by the commander, engineer Ugo Penné, on the occasion of the centenary of the Civici Pompieri di Milano. It began as an exhibition of the service’s memorabilia: early photographs of major fires, recovered objects and illustrations of their causes. It was first housed in a room of the Castello Sforzesco, then in the school building of the Via Ansperto barracks, the command headquarters, and after the Second World War in the basement of the Caserma Centrale on Via Messina, inaugurated in May 1956. The move and the expansion took place between 1958 and 1960.
After a period of decline, with few resources for maintenance and staff, in the early 1990s a group of retired firefighters restored the rooms and recovered materials, and the museum was recognised as a permanent exhibition space. It was reopened on 4 December 1998. Public visits are now managed by the Milan section of the Associazione Nazionale Vigili del Fuoco.
The collections include vehicles and fire-fighting machines (among them steam pumps), equipment, helmets and uniforms, radio and telephone sets, historical documents and photographs, as well as trophies, prizes and certificates from competitions. The route is organised by theme and includes a section in memory of the fallen of the corps.
