About the museum
The museum was inaugurated on 30 August 1956 on the initiative of General Alberto Aliberti and preserves memorabilia, documents and memories of the Third Army, known as “l’Invitta” (the Unconquered), during the First World War. It is not celebratory in intent: it is conceived as a tribute to all the fallen, regardless of nationality, and as an opportunity for reflection on war.
The venue is Palazzo Camerini, a 15th-century building that was the residence of Cardinal Pietro Bembo. Between 1941 and 1943 it housed the command of the ARMIR, and until 1945 a senior German command; after the war it was the seat of the command of the V Army Corps and the designated command of the Third Army. Since September 2009 the museum has occupied the entire building.
The collections include photographs, maps and documents on the operations of 1915–1918 on the Carso and the Lower Piave, weapons, uniforms and trench objects, memorabilia of the Duke of Aosta, Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy, and about sixty thousand signatures of veterans, including those of Gabriele D’Annunzio and Giuseppe Ungaretti. The route includes a trench diorama, a model of the combat zone in the Salone delle Lance, historical-military documentaries and original period music. The Amici del Museo association organises lectures and book presentations.
