About the museum
The museum was conceived by Charles Emmanuel III in 1731 and officially established at the wish of Charles Albert in 1842. In 1893 the collection moved to the Mastio della Cittadella in Turin and was expanded for the celebrations of Italia ’61.
In 2008 the building was returned to the City for a long restoration, and the collections were temporarily moved to other premises, including Via Bologna and Piazza Rivoli. Today the institutional seat is once again the Mastio, on Corso Galileo Ferraris.
The collections range from prehistoric finds gathered in the 19th century by the archaeologist Angelo Angelucci to one of the Turkish bombards that breached the walls of Constantinople in 1453, and up to self-propelled guns and missiles from the Cold War. The museum also holds relics of national history, such as the diary of Charles Albert and the two funeral carriages that carried the body of Umberto I to the Pantheon after the attack in Monza.
