About the museum

The Museo Diffuso opened on 30 May 2003 to give Turin a centre for reflection on contemporary history, in particular the Resistance, deportation and the Second World War. The idea emerged at the end of the 1990s, at the urging of Resistance associations and with the support of the city council.

The venue is the Palazzo dei Quartieri Militari di San Celso, in Corso Valdocco, designed by Filippo Juvarra and built between 1716 and 1728, reopened after a long restoration. The same building houses the Archivio Nazionale Cinematografico della Resistenza, the Piedmont Institute for the History of the Resistance and, since 2009, the Centro Internazionale di Studi Primo Levi.

The museum is “diffuse” because it does not end at its exhibition rooms: it coordinates visits to the main places of memory in the city and the province, and promotes projects linked to the pietre d’inciampo (stumbling stones). It has been a participating member of the Fondazione Polo del '900 since 2016 and of the Paesaggi della Memoria network. The permanent route tells the story of the Resistance and the birth of the Constitution through materials, documents, testimonies and multimedia.
