About the museum
The Museo della Sindone was organised as a permanent exhibition on 4 June 1936 on the initiative of the Confraternita del Santissimo Sudario (Confraternity of the Most Holy Shroud). Since 15 April 1998 it has been housed in the crypt of the church of the SS. Sudario, in Via San Domenico, about ten minutes’ walk from the cathedral; it was inaugurated on that day in the presence of the Archbishop of Turin, Cardinal Giovanni Saldarini. Since 2019 the church of the SS. Sudario, restored in 2018 by the Centro Conservazione e Restauro “La Venaria Reale”, has also been part of the route.
The church, built as an oratory between 1734 and 1735 beside the Pazzerelli hospital, run by the same confraternity, was designed by the engineer Ignazio Mazzoni, a member of the Congregation, and is an 18th-century architectural gem.
The display offers a complete picture of Shroud studies from the 16th century to today, with historical, scientific, devotional and artistic aspects. One wing is devoted to the scientific route, from the first photograph taken by Secondo Pia in 1898 to the three-dimensional image produced in 1978; the other traces the history and veneration of the cloth from the second half of the 15th century, when it became the property of the House of Savoy. Among the most important pieces are the casket used for the definitive transport of the Shroud to Turin in 1578, the 16th-century silver and pietre dure casket that housed it until the fire in Guarini’s chapel in 1997, and the complete series of official photographs. The visit is preceded by a video in five languages.
