About the museum
The museum is located inside the Assai oasis, in the locality of Su Mortoggiu, a protected natural area where hunting is prohibited. Over the years the oasis attracted a growing number of visitors, above all school groups, which led to the creation of a small centre to display the native fauna.
The venue is a former pastoral building, a very simple room that houses taxidermied animals. Among the mammals are the Sardinian deer, fallow deer, wild boar, wildcat, pine marten and weasel. Among the birds are the cornacchia imperiale, owl, barn owl, Sardinian partridge and a golden eagle, set in a forest diorama. There is also a collection of minerals and fossils from all over Sardinia. Outside, visitors can see a charcoal kiln and a typical pinnettu, the shepherds’ shelter.
In the surroundings of the museum, wild boar, fallow deer and red deer, which are accustomed to human presence, are often seen.
