About the museum
Opened in 1986, this was the first museum of sacred art in the Florentine area, created in collaboration between the State, ecclesiastical authorities and the Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze, which funded the project. The building, leaning against the bell tower of the pieve (parish church), was the seat of the Societas Beatae Virginis Mariae Communis Gangalandi, a confraternity founded between the 13th and the early 14th century.
On two floors are displayed works from the pieve of San Martino and its dependent churches. Among the most important pieces are Lorenzo Monaco's Madonna dell'Umiltà (1405–1410), a triptych attributed to Lorenzo di Bicci and his son Bicci di Lorenzo showing the Virgin giving her girdle to Saint Thomas, Jacopo del Sellaio's Madonna and Child, restored in 2010, and a triptych with the Beheading of John the Baptist. The collection is completed by goldsmith's work from the 14th to the 18th century and a 19th-century monstrance.
The nearby pieve, of Romanesque origin, preserves an apse reworked by Leon Battista Alberti in the 15th century, the baptistery frescoed around 1433 by Bicci di Lorenzo, and a baptismal font of 1423 attributed to the workshop of Ghiberti.
