About the museum
The museum is housed in the former rooms adjacent to the basilica-sanctuary of Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae, in Santa Maria di Leuca, restored in 2000. It was founded on the initiative of the sculptor Vito Mele and Monsignor Giuseppe Stendardo, then rector of the basilica, and opened on 31 July 2004.
The collection presents a gallery of sculptors and painters, with sections devoted to historic masters and to contemporary ones, and a space for local artists. It has grown over time through acquisitions and private donations and displays, among others, works by Medardo Rosso, Vincenzo Vela, Giuseppe Grandi, Eugenio Pellini, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Luciano Minguzzi, Kengiro Azuma and Ugo Nespolo.
Its stated aim is to make works of art of many kinds accessible to a wide public.
