About the museum
The Museo della Tonnara in Stintino tells the story of the traditional tuna-fishing method practised in the Gulf of Asinara until the last century, the lives of the men who fished and processed the tuna, and the history of Stintino, which is closely tied to that of the Tonnara Saline. The town was founded in 1885, when 45 families left the island of Asinara, which had been designated a quarantine station and penal colony.
The museum opened on 18 June 2016 in the former Alpi plant, on Via Lepanto, along the scenic road leading into the town, overlooking the Porto Vecchio. It was made possible by the passion and commitment of Salvatore Rubino and Esmeralda Ughi of the Centro Studi sulla Civiltà del Mare. The visit is an audiovisual and musical route: videos with an Italian narration and English subtitles reconstruct the history of the tonnara, of Stintino and of Asinara, alternating period images and testimonies.
On display are tonnara tools, documents, diaries, old newspaper articles, the clothing worn during the mattanza (the tuna kill), reproductions of boats and installations, and works by Sardinian artists who painted tonnara life, including Stanis Dessy, Ausonio Tanda, Nani Tedeschi and Angelo Maggi.
